Whatever you seek, you will become

Our Sunday school class has been studying the book of Jeremiah and today Nathan spoke on Jeremiah 2. He started the lesson with, "Whatever you seek, you will become." My first thought, "Well, duh, honey!" =) He read chapter two of Jeremiah and challenged the class to put themselves in Israel's shoes as he read the text. At the end of the lesson he said again, "Whatever you seek, you will become. Seek Christlikeness and you WILL become more like him."

Israel went from being described as a bride in Jeremiah 2:2, (devoted and "holy to the Lord") to being described as a whore in verse 20 (divided in their service to him, worshiping idols).

So, what did Israel seek that caused God to speak this way? Jeremiah 2:13, "For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed our cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water." The Israelites sought over things in "broken cisterns." They were desiring ungodly, worthless (Jer. 2:5) things.

What they sought they became. Their sin separated them from their Creator and they became worthless. We, like the Israelites, seek after things that are temporal when God desires to nurture us in becoming more like Him.

Am I becoming more like Him?
